Things that are sad: one season you’re at New York Fashion Week; the next season, you’re sitting in class writing blog posts about NYFW coverage. But of course I’ve been following the shows as closely as I would be if I was there – so it was hard to choose which shows to cover on Strategy in Stilettos.
I’ve decided, to honor my amazing experience at NYFW last season, to dedicate this post to covering the same designers whose shows I saw previously, and note the comparison. Cool? Cool.
Below, take a look at my mini-reviews and some of my favorite looks from the collections.
Alexander Wang
At FW12 I felt incredibly lucky to be at one of the biggest “it” shows during NYFW. For SS13, A. Wang stuck with simple colors (this season it was white, black and silver) and had some beautiful cutouts. His silhouettes represented the perfect balance between tight & fitted and, as expected, boxy & androgynous.
DKNY
DKNY for SS13 incorporated looks from its commercial lines, DKNY Jeans and pureDKNY, which I wasn’t a huge fan of (I didn’t include any of those images, but see them here). This wasn’t my favorite DKNY collection overall, though I did love several of the looks. There were also hints of the Donna Karan SS12 collection noticeable in several looks (26, 27, 30).
Donna Karan
Donna Karan’s line this season was actually a little disappointing in my eyes – mostly because her SS12 collection was one of my absolute favorites that season. There were a few pieces this season that were great, but her color palette of whites, grays, nudes, and blues didn’t seem overly creative. The fourth photo shown below, however, I loved. Updated version of the Carrie Bradshaw “naked dress” much?
Marchesa
Marchesa SS13 had clear inspiration. The Indian vibes were evident, and while nothing can surpass the sheer elegance of FW12, this season’s collection utilized rich colors and jewels in a way that only Marchesa could.
Prabal Gurung
Prabal had a lot to live up to after his past two incredible seasons (really, since he hit the scene in 2009!), and though this wasn’t my favorite collection of his, it was definitely gorgeous.
Oscar de la Renta
My favorite recent ODLR season was SS12, and while nothing could compare to that, several of his gowns this season blew me away. Oscar even got a little edgy with leather and bright colors this season, but he always kept up with his signature Upper East Side style.
